Mica inclusions in a Russian emerald
Mica inclusions (probably biotite) in a Russian emerald. This micrograph was taken in polarised light (crossed polarisers), which is why the mica crystals have blue to orange colours. The reddish background owes its colour to the luminescence of trivalent chromium.
