Dioptase: a deceptive green with emerald-like reflections
Long confused with emerald because of its emerald green to dark green hue, the characteristics of dioptase were discovered and described by René-Just Haüy in 1797. The name chosen by the mineralogist etymologically refers to the fact that one ‘sees through’ it (in particular, that one can see its cleavage planes). The sample shown here is associated to a plancheite host rock and originates from Kaokolanb (Namibia).
